While taking a GLP-1, build every meal around protein, add fiber-rich vegetables and legumes gradually, sip fluids steadily between meals, and keep portions small enough to stop before you feel stuffed. Appetite drops sharply on these medications, so the goal shifts from eating less to making the smaller amount you eat count — mostly to protect muscle.
Why nutrition still matters on a GLP-1
The medication lowers appetite; it does not choose what you eat. Weight lost without adequate protein and resistance training includes more muscle, and muscle loss slows metabolism and makes maintenance harder later. Nutrition is what determines whether the weight you lose is the weight you wanted to lose.
Protein priorities for protecting muscle
Put protein first at every meal: eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, fish, poultry, lean beef, tofu, tempeh, lentils, or a quality protein shake when appetite is low. Spreading protein across the day works better than one large evening serving, particularly when early fullness limits meal size.
Pair protein with two to three weekly resistance sessions. This is the single most effective combination for keeping strength while losing fat.
Hydration and electrolytes
Thirst cues often fade on these medications while the need for fluid does not. Aim for steady intake through the day, mostly between meals so you are not filling a slow-emptying stomach at mealtime. If you sweat heavily, exercise hard, or feel lightheaded, ask whether electrolytes make sense for you.
Meal timing and portion size
Three modest meals with an optional protein snack suits most patients better than two large ones. Eat slowly, put the fork down between bites, and stop at comfortably satisfied. Overshooting fullness on a GLP-1 usually costs you the rest of the evening.
Foods that may be harder to tolerate
Fried foods, heavy cream sauces, large portions of red meat, carbonated drinks, and alcohol are common complaints, especially in the days after a dose increase. Very high-fiber additions introduced all at once can also cause bloating — increase fiber gradually with fluid.
When nutrition guidance can improve results
If you are losing strength, feeling constantly tired, struggling to reach protein targets, or plateauing despite dose increases, structured nutrition support usually helps more than another milligram. See why a GLP-1 may not be working yet and our GLP-1 medical weight loss program.

Frequently asked questions
- How much protein should I eat on a GLP-1?
- Many adults do well targeting roughly 0.6 to 0.8 grams per pound of goal body weight daily, spread across meals. Your target may differ with kidney disease or other conditions, so it should be set with your provider.
- What foods should I avoid if I feel nauseated?
- Fried and greasy foods, very large or rich meals, and alcohol tend to worsen nausea. Simpler protein-forward meals, eaten slowly and in smaller portions, are usually better tolerated.
- Can I skip meals on semaglutide?
- Occasionally missing a meal is not dangerous, but a pattern of skipping usually means too little protein overall, which risks muscle loss and fatigue. If appetite is that low, tell your provider before it becomes a habit.
- Why am I tired while taking a GLP-1?
- Fatigue often traces to inadequate calories, low protein, dehydration, constipation, or low iron, B12, or vitamin D. It can also reflect an untreated thyroid issue, which is why baseline labs matter.
- Do I need a nutrition coach while on weight loss medication?
- Not everyone does, but structured nutrition guidance improves muscle retention and long-term maintenance. We build nutrition into the follow-up visits rather than treating it as an add-on.
